Airbus Helicopters on Friday said that it will join hands with Mahindra Defence, to produce helicopters in India in order to meet the country’s military requirements.
The resulting joint venture aims to become the first private Indian helicopter manufacturer under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The teaming represents a significant step forward in the country’s ‘Make in India’ ambition, the press release said.
“Both companies will now get into discussions to finalize the formation of the joint venture which will act as the prime contractor for India’s military helicopter tenders including the Reconnaissance and Surveillance Helicopter, the Naval Utility Helicopter and the Naval Multirole Helicopter procurement programs,” Airbus’ press release said.
“We have an unparalleled track-record of successful industrial collaborations with local partners across the world. We are convinced that with Mahindra we will not only have a mutually rewarding association but one which will offer immense benefits to India,” said Guillaume Faury, Airbus Helicopters President & CEO.
“The tie-up is in line with our intent to develop an indigenous industrial ecosystem for helicopters. The joint venture will be dedicated to supplying the Indian Armed Forces with Made-in-India, state-of-the-art helicopters of high reliability, quality and safety standard based on combat-proven platforms,” Faury added.
“This arrangement between two established and trusted industrial players will create a formidable partnership,” said S. P. Shukla, Group President, Aerospace and Defence Sector and Chairman, Mahindra Defence Systems Limited. “We have extensive expertise in engineering, automotive and fixed-wing sectors and have made substantial investments in aero components manufacturing, while Airbus Helicopters offers best-in-class rotorcraft platforms. Together, we will produce India’s next-generation helicopters that will not only answer our country’s defence needs but will also have the potential for exports in the future,” Shukla added.

Mirage-2000

India’s ” Vajras” turns 30 this year
Named after Mythical thunderbolt weapon of Lord Indra ” Vajra”, Indian air force Mirage-2000s have completed 30 years in Indian air force this year. the first batch of 7 Mirage-2000H (KF102,103,104,106,113 and 114) made the first touchdown on Indian soil at Jamnagar airbase on 26th June 1985.
Start of a Journey
Government of India in 1982 placed orders for 40 Mirage-2000 with the french company Dassault for the supply of 36 Single-seat aircrafts along with 4 trainer variants. India was also the first export customer of the newly developed 4th generation French fighter jet.
While the first squadron was officially converted into the Mirage-2000s in early 1986, most of the pilots came from Mig-21s and Ajeet fighter Squadrons still conversion to the new type was smooth and mirages were more forgiving aircraft for new pilots and IAF pilots quickly put the machine to the test, as per ex Mirage-2000 pilot first year saw insane amount of flying by the squadron, aircraft not only participated in all major Airforce exercises in the year but aircraft was also tested to its limits in its Interception roles since Mirage-2000s were considered only aircraft type capable of taking on modern 4th generation F-16 fighter jets introduced in the region by Rival Pakistani air force .
By 1986, all 40 Mirage-2000s were delivered to India air force but it was also reported by Comptroller and Auditor General of India that due to delays in executing contracts for weapons systems like Matra super 530D BVR missiles and R550 Magic 2 close combat missiles, for first year Mirage-2000s largely remained unarmed and major weapons delivery only started later in 1986.
Operational availability of the aircrafts largely remained on the higher side due to proper supply of spares and superior build quality of the machine and it was reported that aircraft operational availability was close to 80 %. Mirage-2000 also brought in many first for the Indian air force, it was IAF’s first Pure delta-winged aircraft which also introduced the fly-by-wire system in the aircraft. due to high usage of the composite in construction and also due to better workmanship
aircrafts suffered lesser downtime due to airframe related issues.
Mirage-2000s due to its quick-reaction interception capability and excellent climb rate and maneuverability brought in much-needed boost to India’s defenses and was considered highly potent addition to Indian air forces fleet to take on F-16 which had already taken world by storm .
Pakistan ordering additional F-16 was highly anticipated and Orignal Mirage-2000 contract with France had factored in the license to build 110 more Mirage-2000s by HAL in India. Gwalior airbase which housed IAF’s Mirage-2000s already had the base capability to handle 80 Mirage’s, but government and India air force were still in dilemma over purchase of additional Mirage-2000 since it still was an expensive jet to fly and maintain, but there was no doubt on its potential capability to take on F-16s, India almost exercised the option to buy more Mirage-2000s, but then soviets came calling .
In a sudden and dramatical move, experienced test pilots of Indian air force were rushed to Soviet union secretly and IAF pilots were first to lay eyes on secretive 4th generation aircraft which soviets were developing to take on American F-16. Indian pilots were first to fly Mig-29s which were offered to India at throw away price of $16 million per aircraft which was way cheaper then Mirage-2000s and this lead to complete reassessment of Mirage-2000s purchase and India later decided to order Mig-29s instead of Mirage-2000s .
In Action
Mirage-2000s were first used to provide aerial escort to An-32 aircraft over Jaffna in Srilanka and later Mirage-2000s were also used in the show of force over Maldives after a coup was thwarted by the Indian army.
Mirage 2000 was again in thick of action in summer of 1999 when Mirage-2000s were pressed into service to conduct airstrike over Kargil sector against Pakistani Army which had infiltrated into Indian side of LOC and had captured key mountain peaks in the area .
Mirage-2000 showcased why it was premier strike platform aircraft in IAF when it became lead aircraft for operational in such high mountain terrains. Mirage-2000s armed with laser guided bombs destroyed critical enemy positions in Tiger Hill. Israeli provided Litening pod and American supplied Paveway II guidance kit for standard 1000 lb Bomb were not yet fully integrated into the aircraft’s but without much help coming from the US due to sanctions, Indian technicians were able to modify Mirages to carry Litening pod and Precision guided munitions (PGM) in relatively small time frame which changed course of the war and targeting of enemy positions were much more precise and in whole operations in Kargil war , Mirage-2000s flew total 500 sorties out of 1700 total sorties flown by Indian Air force .
While Mig-29 were providing Aerial Escorts to other aircrafts flying in the region, Mirage-2000s emerged clear winner and Hero of Kargil war, which later lead to IAF demanding that newer 126 Mirage-2000 varaint should be ordered which later became MMRCA Competition.
Upgrades
Soon after the war IAF started working on plans to upgrade Mirage-2000 to newest Dash 5 variant which introduced much better avionics and improved radar performance which allowed aircraft better Close and Beyond visual Capabilities by addition of new Mica Air to Air missiles .
Upgradation contract was signed on 2011 after years of negotiation between India and France and later in the same year Two IAF’s Mirage-2000 aircrafts were flown to France. IAF already has received both upgraded aircrafts earlier this year and HAL upgraded Two Mirages will also be handed over to IAF by the end of 2015.
Upgrades will bring in the much-needed influx of technology to keep aircraft relevant for next two decades. Mirages are upgraded to Dash 5 Mk2 Variant which brings in new capabilities and includes longer-range detection and weapon firing against multiple targets and an extended operating envelope that will allow a border-protection mission. The multitrack RDY-3 radar equipment on the Indian Mirage is the same generation the French air force uses on the Mirage 2000D, with range increased to 50 nm from the existing RDM radar’s 40 nm.
While the upgrade does not involve fitting a new engine but In place of the old analogue instruments in the cockpit, the pilots will now have an “all-glass cockpit”, with video displays of flight parameters and weapons aiming and operation. They will also have helmet-mounted sights, which allow pilots to aim weapons at targets merely by looking at them.
Dassault and Thales provided upgrade kits to HAL will allow further upgrades to Mirage-2000s in HAL Facility which will be carried out over next 5-7 years, with this upgrades IAF plans to keep Mirages in operational fleet for next 15-20 years to come

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is setting up a base for operating airborne early warning and control aircraft at the Bhisiana Air Force Station near Bathinda.The base will house indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AEW&CS) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The DRDO’s Bengaluru-based Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) has developed three such systems that are mounted on the Brazilian Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft. Two of the aircraft would be based at Bhisiana while the third will remain positioned at the CABS for research and development, sources said.
Bhiasana will become the second IAF base to operate early warning aircraft after Agra, which is a home to the A-50 AWACS, which are Israeli Phalcon systems integrated with a modified Russian IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft. The IAF operates three A-50s and another two are expected next year.
Technical support and maintenance facilities are being set up at Bhisiana to cater to AEW&CS operations, for which appropriate sites are being identified. The CABS was headed by the recently appointed Director General, DRDO, Dr S Christopher. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha had commanded the Bhisiana airbase as a Group Captain in the early 2000s.
AWACS are force multipliers and can cover a huge swath of airspace, look deep into the enemy territory, detect enemy aircraft and missiles right from the launch phase and intercept communications. Their flying altitude gives them an advantage over ground-based radar and they can provide a real time battlefield picture to commanders for decision making and counter air operations.
DRDO’s Embraer-mounted systems have limited range and capability vis-à-vis the A-50 or similar systems elsewhere. Earlier this year, the Defence Acquisition Council cleared a proposal for the purchase of two French Airbus A-330 aircraft that will be integrated with an advanced early warning and control system to be developed by the DRDO.

The Indian Army has decided to go for an indigenous assault rifle to replace the problematic INSAS rifles. The decision that could save thousands of crores in foreign exchange and boost local manufacture was taken recently by Army Chief General Dalbir Singh. The Army then cancelled a problematic Rs 4,848 crore order for importing Multi Caliber Assault Rifles on June 15-first reported by Mail Today on July 1.
“We are going in for a designed and Made in India rifle in keeping with the government’s indigenisation thrusts,” senior Army sources told Mail Today.
The performance of the DRDO-designed ‘Excalibur’ assault rifle in trials last month at the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune has further enthused the Army. The Excalibur had only two stoppages (where the bullet gets stuck in the breech) after 24,000 rounds were fired, close to the Army’s specifications of only one stoppage.
New features
The Excalibur is an improved version of the INSAS rifle and fires 5.56×45 mm ammunition. It has full-automatic capability over the INSAS which can only fire a three-round burst. The Excalibur barrel is shorter by 4 mm, has a side folding butt stock and features a Picatinny rail, a universal mount that allows a range of weapon sights and sensors to be fitted on the rifle.
DRDO officials say it will take the OFB’s Rifle Factory Ishapore at least eight months to incorporate design changes suggested by the ARDE and field the first prototypes of what they are calling the ‘Modified INSAS Rifle’ (MIR). Changes suggested after trials include a smaller handguard and improved polycarbonate magazine.
If the Excalibur/MIR clears trials, it could be in the hands of infantry soldiers within two years, DRDO officials say. The DRDO is designing a second version of the Excalibur, the AR-2 that fires 7.62×39 mm rounds used by AK-47. The AR-2 will be offered as an alternative to the Russianorigin assault rifle.
The Army’s 2011 tender was for a Multi Caliber Assault Rifle or for a weapon that could fire INSAS and AK-47 ammunition with a barrel change.
Five international firms – Beretta of Italy, Israeli Weapons Industries (IWI), Colt Defense of the US, Ceska Zbplojovka of Czech Republic and SiG Sauer of Switzerland-were shortlisted for the trials.
However, Army officials now admit the specifications were poorly drafted and unrealistic.

Talks between the Navy and Boeing for four additional P-8I maritime surveillance aircraft are at an advanced stage with the Cost Negotiating Committee (CNC) having recently completed the negotiations. The Navy already has eight aircraft on order.
Ministry sources told The Hindu that cost negotiations have been completed recently and the file would soon be sent to the Defence Ministry’s finance wing.
From the finance wing, the file will go to the Finance Ministry before being put up for final approval before the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister.In 2009, India signed a contract for eight P-8Is in a deal worth $ 2.2 billion from Boeing under a direct commercial deal with an optional clause for four more.
The Navy which is quite satisfied with the aircraft has decided to exercise the optional clause and negotiations have been going on for about a year.
Seven aircraft have already been inducted and are based in Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu. The last aircraft is expected to be delivered by October.
The P-8I is a next generation surveillance aircraft based on Boeing 737 commercial airliner and India is its first international customer. It is meant to replace the legacy of Russian aircraft currently in service. India had also purchased 26 Harpoon anti-ship missiles from the US to equip the P-8Is.

Automobile major Tata Motors on Friday said it has bagged an order to supply around 1,200 trucks to the Indian Army.According to the company, the order is the single largest awarded to an Indian private OEM (original equipment manufacturers) in land systems under the DPP (defence procurement procedure) by the Indian Army.
“As leading suppliers of mobility solutions to the country`s security forces, we will shortly commence delivery of these high-mobility vehicles,” Vernon Noronha, vice president, defence and government business at Tata Motors, was quoted as saying in a statement.
The Tata Motors` 6X6 high mobility all-terrain all-wheel-drive vehicle is envisaged to be used as `material handling cranes` for loading-unloading and transportation of ammunition pallets, spares and other operational equipment.
The statement said the truck has been developed indigenously and has completed a total trial duration of 25 months, demonstrating maximum performance in the most demanding conditions.
“Designed to cope with extreme on- or off-road loads, these vehicle have gone through trials like water-fording, on cross-country terrains and plains and at VRDE`s (Vehicle Research and Development Establishment) torture track,” the statement elaborated.
Other unique feature of the vehicle includes central tire inflation system (CTIS) for mobility in soft sand desert conditions.
“The CTIS allows the driver to adjust the tyre pressure from his seat. The system provides the vehicle with better traction on different types of surfaces, especially when carrying vital and heavy loads,” the statement said.
The statement added that the vehicle-cabin is modular with HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and is fully-ready for up-armouring.
The vehicle is capable of achieving sustained speeds of 40 km per hour on severe cross-country terrains.
